Era Período Paleozoico Pérmico Carbonífero Pensilvaniense Misisipiense Devónico Silúrico Ordovícico Cámbrico (De Ordovices, antigua tribu del País de Gales.) También ordoviciense. Periodo de la Era Primaria comprendido entre el Cámbrico y el Silúrico. Son abundantes las rocas de tipo volcánico y metamórfico. La flora se compone únicamente de talofitos. La fauna es muy variada; abundan los trilobites y los braquiópodos al igual que en el Cámbrico, y aparecen los coralarios y nuevos grupos de equinodermos y moluscos. También se inició en él la orogenia caledoniana.
